Machine-readble Passports now a requirement for travel to South Africa









Ensure Your Passport is Valid for Travel to South Africa

Passengers will need to carry a machine-readable passport when travelling to the Republic of South Africa, and not a biometric passport.

This means that passengers will not be permitted to board flights to South Africa unless each traveler, including children and infants, is in possession of a machine-readable passport. Please be aware that if you have plans to travel with children to South Africa, you must attain an individual machine-readable passport for each child before travel.


You can tell whether your passport is machine-readable by the series of numbers, letters and symbols at the bottom of the photo page.

If you don’t find these lines at the bottom of your photo page, your passport is not machine-readable, and you will need to acquire a new passport prior to travel.
